Where we actually work in San Antonio

We are a New Braunfels crew, so the San Antonio work we take is mostly the north and northeast side — the stretch along 1604 and out toward the Hill Country edge, plus the corridor through Selma, Universal City and Garden Ridge that we are passing through anyway.

Further into town we will still come for a job that justifies the trip. We would rather say that plainly than pretend we have a crew sitting downtown.

Live oaks, and oak wilt

The older San Antonio neighborhoods are full of big live oaks, and live oaks are exactly what oak wilt travels through — root to root between neighboring trees, and overland on beetles drawn to fresh cuts.

That means the same rule we apply everywhere: every oak cut painted the same hour, and non-urgent oak pruning kept out of the February-through-June high-risk window. If a group of oaks along a street is thinning from the top down, do not prune anything until it has been looked at.

The cedar line north of town

North and west of 1604 the ground turns to the same thin limestone soil as the rest of the Hill Country, and Ashe juniper takes over. Clearing it back off structures, drives and fencelines is the same work we do at Canyon Lake, and it matters for the same reason — fuel and crowding.

Check the permit before anything big comes down

San Antonio regulates the removal of larger and heritage trees, and the rules are not the same as the surrounding county. It is worth confirming where your tree sits before you commit to taking it out, because the paperwork is a great deal cheaper than the fine.

We will tell you when a tree looks like it is likely in that category. Confirming it with the city is the property owner’s call, and we would rather raise it early than cut first.
